Closely related to domestic poultry; considered routinely polygamous. Has distensible crop for storage as well as initial digestion site; omnivore diet has exceptionally wide latitude. Debeaking often required to prevent cannibalism, but only to upper beak of males. Erythrocytes are nucleated, unlike mammals. Born with one tooth after 17 - 28 day incubation period; lose tooth forever in a few hours. If activities are restricted, bronchitis can develop as acute, highly contagious respiratory problem in both males and females.
