Beaver (Castor canadensis) |
Lives more than 20 years, with style. Basically nocturnal. Can stay under water for 15 minutes. Incisors continue to grow entire lifetime, but molars cease growth at maturity. Has litters with an average of 3.5 kits and a gestation period 105-107 days. Coprophagy is normal and considered important nutritional trait. Tail stores extra fat and used as signal and as rudder while swimming. Has webbed hind feet (ears and nose shut when diving); flaps of skin behind front teeth closes mouth when under water. Transparent eyelids act as goggles. Lodges have varied from 250 to 2600 cu. ft, but there is only one food cache even if there are multiple lodges. Philmont Beaver Fever is actually due to the water parasite Giardia spp.
